Ben's WX Summary - Updated: Tuesday @ 06:51pm
A major storm is forecast to move into Southern California Thursday night into the early part of the weekend bringing a good round of wintry weather! Unfortunately, the snow level will remain pretty high through most of this event as this system develops a strong southerly flow, drawing in a warmer, tropical airmass. Expect variable high cloudiness overnight with lows in the 30s and 40s. Tomorrow will be our transitional day as the onshore flow strengthens ahead of our approaching storm. Highs will cool to the lower 60s with southwest winds gusting 15-25 mph during the afternoon. Clouds and winds will increase Wednesday night through Thursday morning with rain developing during the afternoon. Highs will cool to the 50s on Thursday with south-southwest winds gusting to around 30 mph. Low pressure off the Southern California coast will push a cold front through the area Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing a decent period of moderate to occasionally heavy rain with isolated thunderstorms possible. The snow level will likely start out above 9,000 feet during the onset of precipitation, lowering to near 7,000 feet Thursday night, then possibly around 6,500 feet Friday and Saturday as highs cool to the 40s. Expect a mixed bag of weather with gusty winds, rain, snow, and thunderstorms all possible with this dynamic system. The low may stall over the region Friday into Saturday, with wrap-around moisture producing additional showers into the weekend, exiting on Sunday as another storm approaches the area. Total rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches are likely across our coastal and valley areas, with locally 2-4 inches over the lower coastal slopes. Several inches of snow are also possible above 6,000 feet, with 6-12" above 8,000 feet and 1-2' above 9,000. We'll get a break in the action on Sunday before our next storm arrives on Monday. With colder air in place, Monday's storm has a little better chance for bringing accumulating snowfall above about 5,500 feet, but the details of our forecast are likely to change, so check back often for updates and carry those chains!
